STEM Fair sponsored by MEA
The Mathematics Education Association, the BYU student organization for students majoring in Mathematics Education organized and sponsored a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair to show sixth, seventh, and eighth graders how much fun STEM fields can be for them now and in college.
Congratulations MEA!
MEA was awarded a student affiliate grant from the NCTM Mathematics Education Board of Trustees to host our 2nd annual STEM fair for 6 - 8 grade students in the Spring of 2015.
Grad Student Presenting at AMTE
At AMTE we reported the results of a study on the alignment of curriculum materials to learning standards. Specifically, we chose two popular textbook series to examine how well they align with ratio and proportion learning standards from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in grades 6-8. Although both textbooks advertise alignment with these learning standards, our results indicate shortcomings in terms of opportunities in the text for students to do the mathematical work expected of them. For example, in 6th grade students are expected to use a constant multiple to relate two quantities, but by our analysis it is rare for these textbooks to encourage this strategy.
Dr. Corey and Dr. Peterson In Japan
The overarching question Dr. Corey and Dr. Peterson are trying to answer is “What are the characteristics of high quality mathematics instruction?” When you look at the international performance on mathematics achievement tests, the US is in the middle of the pack and Japan is usually at the top. Thus they have been interested in what Japanese mathematics educators view as high quality mathematic instruction.
